Hi all,

Been following x64 installation hand book.

Tried a few times installing Gentoo within Virtualbox as guest without success.

Today I came across following error message when emerging grub2.[/code]

Now with above informnation I don't see anything that can help me troubleshooting whats going wrong.

The failure message you posted merely notes that an earlier failure occurred, and directs you on what to provide so that we can help you. Please follow its instructions. The build.log is necessary, and probably too big to post inline. You can use a pastebin service to host that log, and link to it here. If it is too big for that, grab the last 2000 lines and pastebin from there to the end of the file.

Thanks for getting back to me so fast!.

Curious, how do you know an earlier failure occurred?

I'll look what build.log has when I get home and post pastebin link.

Hello Hu,
As requested last 500 lines. (2000 was too large)

https://pastebin.com/0S43ugxW

I see below text, am I looking at the right place?
Code:

/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/llvm-8.0.1/work/llvm-8.0.1.src/include/llvm/ADT/ArrayRef.h:102:37: warning: initializing ‘llvm::ArrayRef<llvm::SDValue>::Data’ from ‘std::initializer_list<llvm::SDValue>::begin’ does not extend the lifetime of the underlying array [-Winit-list-lifetime]
{standard input}: Assembler messages:
{standard input}:53962: Warning: end of file not at end of a line; newline inserted
{standard input}:54411: Error: unbalanced parenthesis in operand 2.
{standard input}: Error: open CFI at the end of file; missing .cfi_endproc directive
x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-g++: fatal error: Killed signal terminated program cc1plus
compilation terminated.

A quick google search suggests it may be a memory issue.
I have 2GB, two processors, is it correct that i have -j3 in my USE flags?

Thanks in advance.

Code:
x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-g++: fatal error: Killed signal terminated program cc1plus

Tipically out of memory error try to build package with MAKEOPTS="-j1" or add a temporary swap space

Tried emerging with -j1

Same error again. Then I saw your comment RE adding temp swap file.

Running your commands I came accross another error.

Code:

(chroot) livecd / # dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile.swp bs=1024 count=3M
3145728+0 records in
3145728+0 records out
3221225472 bytes (3.2 GB, 3.0 GiB) copied, 29.8215 s, 108 MB/s
(chroot) livecd / # mkswap /swapfile.swp
mkswap: /swapfile.swp: insecure permissions 0644, 0600 suggested.
Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 3 GiB (3221221376 bytes)
no label, UUID=4a83f45c-bcd1-416c-8393-d407ec69e4f0
(chroot) livecd / # chmod 0600 /swapfile.swp
(chroot) livecd / # swapon /swapfile.swp
swapon: /swapfile.swp: swapon failed: Invalid argument

This lead me to swapon-failed-invalid-argument-on-a-linux-system-with-btrfs

Either I need to add more RAM to my VM or shrink my root file system and add swap.

Adding more RAM would be easier I guess.

Yes, sorry I don't remeber that was a gentoo in a virtualbox

No worries, I ended up starting again, did something wrong with my partitioning.

Creating a swap file on a btrfs filesystem is possible but you need to follow special steps: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Swap_file#Swap_file_creation

The part you had quoted is a standard Portage message that is shown when the managed build fails. There is always a preceding actual failure. The only question is whether that failure was printed in a way that is easy to find.
