I tried laptop-mode-tools but the project seems to be unmaintained ... Any alternatives to laptop-mode-tools ?

The one vice I allow myself is a script that monitors the loadavg and temperature and pokes a platform-specific undervolting control to keep them in check.

Other than that, I use a screen timeout of 10 minutes, let schedutil and C-states spin down the CPU automatically, and have the sleep button bound to "printf mem >| /sys/power/state". Everything else is just a layer that can break.

pm-utils is also apparently unmaintained now, but both it and laptop-mode tools continue to work. I'm not sure all their tweaks actually save much power other than by dimming the screen and changing cpu governor to on-demand (which AFAIK is the recommended default everywhere now except for gamers).

I ran a powertop report on my laptop when I first got it, and virtually all the controllable power consumption was screen and cpu.
