Hi,
after compilation of these kernel series I obtain two problem:
1) when the system ask username and password, it pause until go to timeout without login (kernel 5.3 series login OK)
2) all the kernel required double compilation because after the first system hang but after the second compilation boot regular.
I use the same .config file with the option make oldconfig.
The 1) problem sometimes can be overcome if I boot first the kernel 5.3 and after the kernel 5.4.
Please tell me how information may be useful.

Code:

Hello stelinux.

This sound very strange. let me get this straight:

- kernel 5.3 does boot and you can log in
- kernel 5.4 does boot and you can NOT log in
- BUT you can log in if you boot 5.3 and then reboot into 5.4?

How to do you log in? DM, X or just plain login?

I use
Code:
make olddefconfig
when I upgrade a kernel (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Kernel/Upgrade)

Hi,
I have found the solution and perhaps the problem. It is not the kernel problem but a problem related to mit-krb5 and specificaly to pam-krb5. I've change mit-krb5 with heimdal (probably it would have been enough to compile mit-krb5 again) and voilà login is OK. I don't know why kernel 5.4 not login and kernel 5.3 yes.
My login is always plain.
Problem # 2 remains

compiling the kernel is somewhat complex:
01) edit /etc/env.d/10kernel-output (I've created because of nvidia-drivers) and define KERNEL_OUTPUT and KBUILD_OUTPUT = "/var/tmp/kernel-output/5.4.7-gentoo-r0"
02) eselect kernel set n.
03) USE="experimental" because of ryzen9 3900x
04) mount /boot
05) copy .config from the old kernel to the new and launch make oldconfig (but from the next I use make olddefconfig)
06) make menuconfig for the last refinment
07) make -j 12 && make modules_install && make install
08) after 2 minutes emerge -1av @module rebuild
but when I reboot kernel hang after refind.... so
09) make mrproper
10) copy .config form the backup
11) make -j 12 && make modules_install && make install
and now kernel boot without problem.
I swear that after the first compilation I no longer edit .config

Does this mean you start a emerge WHILE the kernel is building?
