The nvidia-drivers-440.44-r1.ebuild must be patched in order to build against the linux-5.5.0-gentoo sources. The patch is located here

Just download the patch and place it into the files directory of the ebuild :

Code:
/var/db/repos/gentoo/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers/files

So it will look like ths :

Code:
ls /var/db/repos/gentoo/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers/files                                                                                  root@Valhalla
50nvidia-prelink-blacklist          nvidia-persistenced.conf          nvidia-settings-linker.patch  nvidia-uvm.udev-rule
95-nvidia-settings                  nvidia-persistenced.init          nvidia-smi.init               xf86-video-nvidia-0000-fix-for-kernel-5.5.patch
95-nvidia-settings-r1               nvidia-rmmod.conf                 nvidia.udev-rule
nvidia-169.07                       nvidia-settings.desktop           nvidia-udev.sh
nvidia-drivers-440.26-locale.patch  nvidia-settings-fno-common.patch  nvidia-udev.sh-r1

Then edit the ebuild to include the new patch :

Code:
PATCHES=(
        "${FILESDIR}"/${PN}-440.26-locale.patch
        "${FILESDIR}"/xf86-video-nvidia-0000-fix-for-kernel-5.5.patch
)

And finally rebuild the digest

Code:
/var/db/repos/gentoo/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers # ebuild nvidia-drivers-440.44-r1.ebuild digest                                               root@Valhalla
>>> Creating Manifest for /var/db/repos/gentoo/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers

Then, as usual :

Code:
emerge --ask @module-rebuild

All is well.

Why not use directly /etc/portage/patches?

That didn't even occur to me :lol:

I only recently used /etc/portage/patches for DWM as well. Old habits, yada yada yada...

{EDIT}

So any old school masochists can use the system outlined in the OP. Anyone else use what fedeliallalinea mentioned above.
