Hi,

I just installed a new Gentoo system on new hardware which does not have PS/2 ports (just USB ports for the keyboard).

The minimal live USB boots fine, and I can use my USB keyboard to perform the installation tasks onto my hard drives.
I do not configure the network from the live system (via chroot) because I intend to do so once I've booted into the new system from the hard drives. This is standard procedure even for the Gentoo Handbook.

When I finally try to boot from my HDD, the GRUB menu works fine (I can change menu items with my USB keyboard), and I can boot my kernel which is gentoo-sources 4.19.97 for x86_64.
All's fine until the boot process says:

Code:
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
 * ERROR: netmount needs service(s) net

It stays like this for ages. Pressing ALT-F* has no effect (maybe the USB keyboard is not detected).

So I decide to reboot with my live USB to chroot into the HDD installation and add a dummy init script that "provides net".

Here it is:

Code:
#!/sbin/openrc-run

description="Provides net."

depend()
{
        need sysfs
        after modules
        after bootmisc
        after net.lo net.lo0 dbus
        need localmount
        provide net
}

I add it to the default runlevel.

I then reboot into the HDD, and I can see that at least the init process doesn't give me the previous error, and I somehow reach the login prompt pretty quickly.

At that point, I am unable to use my USB keyboard, even if I change USB ports.
So there could be something wrong/missing in my compiled kernel which doesn't support this USB keyboard.
Of course, given that the keyboard does not work, I am unable to tell if it's just because the kernel can't detect it, or if it's because the system has frozen.

Any ideas?

I was thinking of rebooting into the live system, and adding all my NIC's as init net.* scripts in DHCP mode. So then I could at least know if the system is frozen or not.

If it were a USB-only issue, what could I check for?
The kernel source config file seems to enable USB.

Thanks,

Vieri

BTW, here's what I see if I grep for USB in a copy of my kernel config file:

Fixed. Was missing CONFIG_USB_XHCI_HCD.
