Sound used to work on my machine. But it stopped during a bunch of upgrading and I'm getting nowhere troubleshooting it.

I have the following hardware:

Code:

localhost /usr/src/linux # lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 06)

But Alsa doesn't seem to see it.

Code:

localhost /usr/src/linux # dmesg | grep -i sound
[    0.272940] Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Initialized.
[    0.378016]   No soundcards found.

I have triple checked the kernel:

Code:

localhost /usr/src/linux # grep SND_HDA .config
CONFIG_SND_HDA=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_HWDEP=y
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_RECONFIG is not set
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INPUT_BEEP=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INPUT_BEEP_MODE=1
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_PATCH_LOADER is not set
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_ANALOG=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_SIGMATEL=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_VIA=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_HDMI=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CIRRUS=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CONEXANT=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CA0110=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CA0132=m
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CA0132_DSP is not set
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CMEDIA=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_SI3054=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_GENERIC=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT=0
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CORE=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_COMPONENT=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_I915=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_PREALLOC_SIZE=64

And I'm at a loss at this point.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Jon.

jesnow,

You may not build
Code:
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL=y
and
Code:
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_*=m

Well, you can build it than way but it won't work.
All built in works. All modular works. Modular is safer as it allows module parameters to be determined by trial and error if you need them.
