I was trying to install Gentoo on qemu/kvm. No I realize that my vm was in bios mode. But my install is based on uefi. Is there a way to change qemu/kvm on the fly, or do I have to restart the process?

Is there a problem with restarting qemu? Edit: If your current qemu bios doesn't support EFI then it can't use it. I mean you could still boot your install directly (any working grub could load the kernel), but it wouldn't be through EFI.

For sake of testing, I'd generally suggest to boot your qemu with OVMF bios to be closer to a modern UEFI PC (EFI variables can be saved in a separate file), like, not sure what you're using qemu with but if was command line:
Code:
-drive if=pflash,format=raw,unit=0,file=/usr/share/edk2-ovmf/OVMF_CODE.fd,readonly \
-drive if=pflash,format=raw,unit=1,file=/path/to/copy/of/OVMF_VARS.fd

Then it should boot your EFI install fine, may just need to set EFI variables (aka re-"install" grub or use efibootmgr to make a boot entry) unless using the --removable path mentioned in the handbook that a EFI bios should use by default.

IvJEJY,

If you reinstall the VM boot loader for BIOS mode, it may just work.
You will have mixed BIOS and GPT but that mostly works too. I've not tried the mix in qemu/kvm.
