PostPosted: Tue Mar 24, 2020 8:51 pm    Post subject: Sound no longer working Reply with quote

After a kernel upgrade from =sys-kernel/gentoo-source-5.5.10 to =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-5.5.11 and a reboot my sound is no longer working at all under the 5.5.11 or 5.5.10.

I found a recent similar thread and have removed pulseaudio from my system (thanks for the guide @neddyseagoon), but to no avail and can not work out what the problem is.

I've a suspicion this may be a hardware problem and the on-board sound card has bitten the dust but am unsure how to proceed.

Information on the hardware...

Code:

The full kernel configuration is .config, whilst the relevant SND modules are...

Code:

 # grep '^CONFIG_SND' /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_SND=m
CONFIG_SND_TIMER=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM=m
CONFIG_SND_HWDEP=m
CONFIG_SND_RAWMIDI=m
CONFIG_SND_JACK=y
CONFIG_SND_JACK_INPUT_DEV=y
CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL=y
CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM_TIMER=y
CONFIG_SND_HRTIMER=m
CONFIG_SND_DYNAMIC_MINORS=y
CONFIG_SND_MAX_CARDS=32
CONFIG_SND_PROC_FS=y
CONFIG_SND_VERBOSE_PROCFS=y
CONFIG_SND_VMASTER=y
CONFIG_SND_DMA_SGBUF=y
CONFIG_SND_AC97_CODEC=m
CONFIG_SND_DRIVERS=y
CONFIG_SND_DUMMY=m
CONFIG_SND_ALOOP=m
CONFIG_SND_PCI=y
CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_HWDEP=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_GENERIC=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT=0
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CORE=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_COMPONENT=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_I915=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_PREALLOC_SIZE=2048
CONFIG_SND_INTEL_NHLT=y
CONFIG_SND_INTEL_DSP_CONFIG=m
CONFIG_SND_USB=y
CONFIG_SND_USB_AUDIO=m

I made sure I've CONFIG_SND_HDA_I915 and CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK enabled.

Currently loaded modules are...

Code:

 # lsmod | grep snd
snd_usb_audio         299008  1
snd_usbmidi_lib        40960  1 snd_usb_audio
snd_rawmidi            45056  1 snd_usbmidi_lib
snd_hda_intel          45056  0
snd_intel_dspcfg       20480  1 snd_hda_intel
snd_hda_codec         147456  1 snd_hda_intel
snd_hwdep              16384  2 snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_codec
snd_hda_core          102400  2 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm               126976  4 snd_hda_intel,snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_core
snd_timer              40960  1 snd_pcm
snd                   102400  10 snd_hwdep,snd_hda_intel,snd_usb_audio,snd_usbmidi_lib,snd_hda_codec,snd_timer,snd_pcm,snd_rawmidi

So neither the I915 nor REALTEK codec's appear to have been loaded.

Not much during kernel booting...

Code:

 # dmesg | grep snd
[    4.842087] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: bound 0000:00:02.0 (ops i915_audio_component_bind_ops [i915])
[    5.048294] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: CORB reset timeout#1, CORBRP = 0
[    5.049907] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: no codecs found!
[    5.108464] usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio

...and aplay/alsamixer/amixer shows nothing...

Code:

# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
# alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
 # amixer
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory

Finally tree of /dev/snd

Code:

 # tree -f /dev/snd/
/dev/snd
├── /dev/snd/by-id
│   └── /dev/snd/by-id/usb-046d_HD_Pro_Webcam_C920_F829471F-02 -> ../controlC1
├── /dev/snd/by-path
│   └── /dev/snd/by-path/pci-0000:02:00.0-usb-0:1:1.2 -> ../controlC1
├── /dev/snd/controlC1
├── /dev/snd/pcmC1D0c
└── /dev/snd/timer

All of this makes me think the on-board sound is caput, it is no more, but wondering if there is anything else I should try?

Thanks in advance.

No I hadn't as I don't normally need to.

I've given it a whirl and rebooted but still no play back devices listed by aplay.

Because the card doesn't use the realtek codec
Code:
head -1 /proc/asound/card?/codec#?

could be because the m/b you speak off is not the one you have link :)
Your lspci is showing everywhere Asustek components, and your link is to a mb made by gigabyte
same, your link claim a Realtek 8111C lan card, but lspci is showing an intel one

You or me need a coffee :)

Its me, but I don't drink coffee (or tea).

Ok forgot to look in /proc/asound...

Code:

# tree /proc/asound/
/proc/asound/
├── C920 -> card1
├── card0
├── card1
│   ├── id
│   ├── pcm0c
│   │   ├── info
│   │   └── sub0
│   │       ├── hw_params
│   │       ├── info
│   │       ├── status
│   │       └── sw_params
│   ├── stream0
│   ├── usbbus
│   ├── usbid
│   └── usbmixer
├── cards
├── devices
├── hwdep
├── modules
├── oss
│   ├── devices
│   └── sndstat
├── pcm
├── timers
└── version

6 directories, 19 files

That there is nothing under /proc/asound/card0 is perhaps cause for some concern and suggests the sound card is perhaps not being detected?
