If it's necessary, it should be pretty easy to just build/copy your own fdisk and make it available to the minimal cd (put it on usb storage, get over network, etc.. could even include libraries if there's mismatch). Probably a better option than running older of everything. I'm sure those minimal cds are still around somewhere though.

SarahS93,

Why do you need the old fdisk?

The old fdisk only supported MSDOS partition tables. The new one defaults to GPT but will do MSDOS if you ask it nicely.
Code:
fdisk -t dos /dev/sde

WARNING
Code:
Device     Boot Start        End    Sectors  Size Id Type
/dev/sde1  *        1 1000215215 1000215215  477G ee GPT
is the 'protective' msdos partition on a GPT disk label drive

Code:
fdisk /dev/sde
Device      Start        End   Sectors   Size Type
/dev/sde1    2048     249855    247808   121M Linux filesystem
/dev/sde2  249856 1000214527 999964672 476.8G Linux filesystem
is the GPT partition table on the same drive. Do not change it if you find one of these.

I think you can even force the start sector of the first partition to be sector 63 but don't to that. If the drive has 4kB physical sectors, you are forcing misaligned accesses.
It does not have a big impact on read speeds but write speeds are much slower.

The new default start sector of 2048 instead of 63 is 4k aligned and helps with conversion to GPT later, as the first copy of the GPT ends at 2047.
