Trying to install gentoo on Dell XPS 13 9370 laptop.

I am at step 2 of the Handbook (configuring the network) and trying to configure wired Ethernet adapter attached to USB-C port through USB C to Ethernet Adapter.

lsusb shows it (typing, so could be mistakes):

Code:

lsusb | grep Eth
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0bda:8153 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8153 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

But probably the driver is not loaded because ifconfig does not show any eth interface (cannot really copy the output here as don't have network configured, but I am sure).

I did some search and figured I probably need kernel with CONFIG_USB_RTL8152 (although unsure if it supports RTL8153; it seems at least there was some effort to support it); but it is not in my live cd's /etc/kernels/kernel-config-4.19.97-gentoo-x86_64

Is there any way to configure this adapter for installation or I have to try wireless (I would really prefer wired)?

Thank you.

[Update] walked it around by allowing wifi. Sad. Thanks to everybody who tried to help.

Welcome to Gentoo paulto,

you do not have to use Gentoo minimal CD, just any modern Linux CD/DVD will do which allows you to get shell. There is nothing in install media which will be part of your installation. With your ethernet you should look at ifconfig -a, the device is probably named something else, not ethX.

paulto,

Welcome to Gentoo.

There is also sneakernet
That post is 14 years old. The method is valid but the default locations for /usr/portage and /usr/portage/distfiles have changed.

Code:
emerge --info
will show the locations you need to use.
