Dell Precision T7400, 2x quad core xeon, 5gb ram, 64GB SSD, GTX 1050 3GB (GP106)

I've got my system booting, but the last output on the screen is the echo from grub2 'Booting vmlinuz 4...'. This does not disappear but stays on the screen, while the kernel does its thing. I know this, because I made a null modem adapter, and had my laptop listen to the machine boot with a prolific serial adapter. It's booting successfully and handing off control to openrc, just no vga (or any other resolution) console. The last message sent from the kernel is 'Starting local ... [ ok ]'. I was able to log the whole thing in Putty though, so if there are useful bits, I can copypaste here.

Previously, I was able to boot to a login prompt in a vga console, but after removing all the FB drivers from the kernel (per the instructions in the NVidia guide) I ended up in what I thought was a kernel panic (but is actually just this lack of display console) rebuilt the kernel a few times with different options, broke support for the disk drives, got it back, still a blank screen, but this time I have this serial output so I know it's not actually panicked.

Did I mess something up in the boot options when I added the serial console? The NVidia guide on the wiki was a little confusing.

How do I begin to troubleshoot this?

CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS

I have turned this kernel option on, you should not.

Nope that's not it, CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS is not set. EDIT2: OK, I'm down to just:
Code:
DEPMOD  4.19.97-gentoo
depmod: WARNING: /lib/modules/4.19.97-gentoo/video/nvidia.ko needs unknown symbol numa_node
depmod: WARNING: /lib/modules/4.19.97-gentoo/video/nvidia.ko needs unknown symbol efi
depmod: WARNING: /lib/modules/4.19.97-gentoo/video/nvidia.ko needs unknown symbol node_data

Most of the lot was drm support -> fb legacy

still gotta track down these last three...

A little more reading reveals nothing about these specific symbols, but possibly because I'm compiling from a livecd (in a properly set up chroot) the kernel I'm running is old? So, deselect nvidia-drivers, depclean, recompile the kernel, reboot, reemerge nvidia-drivers, recompile the kernel again from the fresh kernel?

Then you have built nvidia modules against a different kernel, you have to run the kernel you built the modules for. Check with 'uname -a' to make sure the timestamp and version is what expected.

For instance, make sure the linux symlink points to correct sources and run 'emerge @module-rebuild'.

Done, and done. Fixed. Also, had to change my gfxpayload in /etc/default/grub to “text” instead of “keep” fixed the blank booting. Onward to GNOME!
