Code:
si::sysinit:/sbin/openrc sysinit

Code:
rc::bootwait:/sbin/openrc boot

Code:
id:3:initdefault:

the "si" "rc" "id" portions of the above segments of /etc/initab
this may be overly thorough or obvious but I don't believe that the meaning to these is ever actually defined
there's no definition otherwise so far as I know doing a cursory scan of the page using search

thank you

They are just identifiers for the inittab lines. They only have to be unique for each line, and don't otherwise have to have a particular meaning. The important part is the third field, which in turn defines which other fields are relevant.

you mean they're just for the reader as a custom identifier they actually dont have a function like the third column entry?

They have no purpose other than serving as unique identifiers for each line. As long as they don't repeat and don't exceed a maximum length (generally 4), they can be anything you like.

sysvinit comes from a time where abbreviating things to 2-3 characters was considered a good idea. It's not any more, but nobody ever fixed it.

The equivalent of those labels in a more modern init system would be to use descriptive service script filenames (and not cram everything into a one-service-per-line global config file in the first place).
