Hello everyone,

I have an ASUS X411UA laptop on which I had Arch installed and lastly my SSD was showing SMART error.
So I bought a new SSD and wanted to take advantage to install Gentoo. This is something I had already successfully done in the past on a Vaio laptop.

Here is my issue : when booting the minimal install CD or even the live DVD, my wifi card is not automatically detected. The card is an RTL8822BE.
On the minimal install CD, I cannot even load any module as it throws me "Read-Only File System" errors with modprobe and depmod.
On the live DVD, I cannot find a module that could fit my hardware. I tried to modprobe many of them and no wifi card shows up.

As a side note, my laptop does not have an ethernet port.

Does anyone have an idea to make my card work ?

Many thanks in advance !

Welcome to Gentoo Alphaxi

The search function of these forums is not greatest, but you can use some other search engine.

Alphaxi,

Welcome to Gentoo.

The mininimal Gentoo install CD does not have very good WiFi support and the current LiveDVD is quite old. It probably predates your wifi.

The boot media you use to install Gentoo is just a toolkit. None of its code goes into your install.
You can use any toolkit you have to hard that will give you a root shell.
With non Gentoo live media, you need one extra step
Code:
mkdir /mnt/gentoo

Now follow the handbook.

If you are determined to use the Gentoo media, that works too. You will need to use 'sneakernet' to get to the point where you boot your own kernel and set up your wifi.
That's the 'hair shirt' way to get started though.

Hello Jaglover and NeddySeagoon,

Thank you for your answers and sorry for my late return.
Indeed, I have been searching on the web but I think my previous searches were not formulated good enough.

Anyway, I finally succeeded thanks to this : https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Installation_alternatives after Neddy's remark.

I am now learning a lot about the configuration of the bootloader.

Thanks again for you time. Cheers !
