I get an IO error on my tape drive.

Before start:

While creating a backup:

the drive fails after a few seconds, diagnostics I performed:

after a few minutes, smartctl returns back to normal (no tapealert any longer).
I think I need to dig deeper into what actually happens with the drive when it goes into error state, but how should I do that?
