My scanner, an Agfa Snapscan E25 normally worked really well under linux.
However, lately it started causing hard lockups after finishing a scan:
Code:

drivers/usb/image/scanner.c: read_scanner(48): funky result:-75. Consult Documentation/usb/scanner.txt.
usb 3-2: bulk timeout on ep2out

Google told me the problem appears to be quite common, also for other types of scanners. I found a tiny kernel patch for /usr/src/linux/drivers/usb/scanner.c:
Code:

                        }
-                       count -= this_read; /* Compensate for short reads */
+                       count -= partial; /* Compensate for short reads */
                        bytes_read += partial; /* Keep tally of what actually was read */
                        buffer += partial;
                } else {

No more lockups since then.
I applied this patch to kernel 2.6.0. The original came from 2.4.17.
I hope you never need it :wink:
Note: the patch may cause problems for other scanners; that' s why it has not been applied to the kernel by default.
