Hello all.

I am a relative linux newbie just getting through my first gentoo install on an Athlon XP box, and would like to have hand at installing on my 17" powerbook (dual boot with OSX). I know that under Yellow Dog there is no support for variable speed CPU fan thermal management on the 17". I'm assuming this is the case for Gentoo as well.

So, I was wondering if anybody had any thoughts or experience of putting the CPU of this machine through compiling all this software with no real way of knowing if the fan is doing its job. I'd hate to melt this thing...

The real reason that I am looking to install on the laptop so I can easily show others at my school (currently working on my masters) what linux is capable on a mac. If an install on this machine is not advisable, I could just use the Gnome / KDE live CD. However, I can't find the iso's anywhere. All the links I find seem to be dead.

Any ideas?

MAny thanks.

well if you're worrie dabout heat you could do what i'm doing now. My system recently overheated and killed my hard drive so i'm reinstalling on a new drive. I've moved the system next to a window and am compiling in small chunks until i get my new fans and such in the mail. I've a desktop by the way... Any way if you take it in small chunks you should be fine. Definitely start w/ a stage 3 install and instead of emerging kde just do emerge -p kde and write down a few packages and emerge those shutdown for a while and repeat. Might take longer but you'll have piece of mind

Wait. So you mean it will cook your powerbook. I have a 12" G4 powerbook. I thought it didn't have a fan. Maybe the 17" is different. I am sorry if this sounds dumb I am totally new at this.
