I'm not sure but I think that it may be because your disk is full.

If that is not the case, you can delete the tar-ball. I have experience on several occations that it help.

No, my disk is quite empty, just checked, and I have tried to delete the tar-ball and download and emerge again the package, but the result is the same.
I will file a bug report.

Has there been any updates on this?

Really sucks not being able to run emerge -u world w/o this error.

and no, my drive isn't full either....

Someone's more on the ball than I am :)

Thanks for that link, seems to have fixed it right up... I'm finishing the rest of the gnome updates as I write.
