Hello,

I am having problems installing Gentoo on a 333Mhz iMac G3. It has 288MB of RAM and 6GB on the hard-disk. When I boot using a GPR live CD for G3, I get lots of errors like this:

Error making directory "/lib/dev-state/vc" Read-only file system
or
error making tree for: "/lib/dev-state/vc/1"

At the login prompt I enter "root" and I get the same errors again. It doesn't prompt me for password but goes back to the login prompt. I also did a clean installation of Mac OS 8.6 from the CD and tried again but didn't have any luck. I read the instructions/FAQ and searched the web but couldn't find an answer. Please help!

Thanks,
raman

sounds like maybe the disk is bad, could you try a non-grp or just redownloading/burning the group? did you check the md5 to make sure the download was sucessful?

Hi garn,

Actually my drive doesn't read CDRs so I bought the CDs from the store (and they work fine on my powerbook G4.) Do I need to update my firmware or something?

I found out that I had defective RAM and it boots okay after I replaced it :)
