Ok I booted up my iBook into Gentoo today and all was fine. I did an emerge sync and that went great also. I recently made the decision to use the unstable ppc tree of portage and so I decided that now was a good time. After setting up my make.conf for ~ppc I ran emerge world.

This also went without problems. After the process was finshed I started up x and logged into gnome. Then I remembered I wanted to try out mol (mac-on-linux). So I open up my terminal and type 'emerge mol'.

Now once mol had finiihed compiling, instead of being back at the command prompt portage started unmerging quite a few files, none of which were related to the emerge of mol.

At exactly that moment I started getting errors about missing commands. Commands such as ls / rm / mkdir / modprobe / shutdown... they were all gone.

eeek emerge isn't thread safe (at least in the past it seemed to be but it wasn't and now it definitely isn't). I would suggest getting your bootdisk and grabbing the portage rescue stuff and emerging system again.
