Hello everyone,

I own an old iBook and a G4 Cube. I use the cube for work and as a media centre but the ibook sits in the corner all alone. I thought that rather than throw/give it away I should learn a little about Linux.

My problem is I don't even know where to start (i'm already scared and in over my head) I have always used Apple and because of this I don't know anything as Apple 'just works'

Can anyone help me? I need help big time. Can anyone out their talk me through setting up Gentoo Linux 1.4 (thats the distro I have; the G3 version). I need to be talked through every key press. I tried using the help that came with the CD's but only got as far as logging in with the name 'root'

I have an iBook 500, 640RAM 10gig HD, DVD player running 10.3. I only want Gentoo on the box and don't want to network it. Also I don't have access to an internet account so can't do anything online with it.

Is there anyone out there that could help or would I be best just giving up?

I don't think you should give up, but I also don't think you should try gentoo if you don't know anything about linux and don't have a resident geek near you who can help you.
You should probably give a noob friendlier distro a try, for example:

Mandrake: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/

or

YellowDog: http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/ydl_home.shtml

Just try them, play around with them and if you like it and have learned a little bit more about linux come back to gentoo.

Have fun! :D

ralph,

Thank you. I didn't know which distro I should go with and thought the pretty label on the Gentoo CDs was cool (do you think that might not be the best way of picking a distro ;-)

Does anyone have a set of old CDs they don't need? I'm a student who doesn't have a broadband connection (or any connection (i'm at Uni now)) or two brass farthings to rub together. Dam I sound cheap but I have to be dam tuition fees.

Not a good way to pick distro's no....though it is how I got into suse :)

linux magasine cover disks tend to be good, I have 1 with a suse 8 entire distribution on DVD but I can't copy it for you as it is a dvd.

neveyxxx

I just noticed your from Manchester. Its a small world I go to Manchester Met Uni and am writing this not 5 min from the city centre in the Aytoun building by the train station. If you have (or could get) a PPC version of Mandrake I would be happy to buy you a pint in return.

Are those magazine CDs PC only? As an Apple Mac user I need to use a Power PC (PPC) version of Linux if I want it to run on my G3 iBook.

Does anyone know if there is a Linux magazine that might have a free version of PPC mandrake (UK)?
