Hi folks,

I guess this questions have been asked for several times now, but I couldn't find a good answer using the search button...

As far as I know 'emerge ppc-development-sources' bring the latest 2.6.x kernel to my machine, doesn't it? But I'm wondering whether these sources are from the benh-tree or does Gentoo have its own 'kernel tree for the power pc'? If so, do they still include the latest benh patches? And could anyone point out the difference between the bk (bit keeper) kernel (if there's one)? Which one do you recommend?

Are there any known issues I should know about (for e.g concerning alsa, X11 and dri or something like that) I'd like to install a 2.6.x kernel or is the latest 2.4.2x kernel a better choice so far?

My setup: G4/400, ATI Rage 128 Pro...

Kind regards,

ppc-development-sources include the benh patches:

emerge search ppc-development-sources
[ Results for search key : ppc-development-sources ]
[ Applications found : 1 ]
*  sys-kernel/ppc-development-sources
      Latest version available: 2.6.1-r1
      Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
      Size of downloaded files: 32,928 kB
      Description: Full sources for the linux kernel 2.6 with benh's patchset

As for whether it's worth a try, I think it is -- I've seen more than a few reports here of success (search here for 2.6 and ppc together). I've only had time to try 2.6.1 briefly on my iBook; I had a bit of trouble with X (dri and glx together caused problems), and I determined that pbbuttonsd might need a littel re-configuring, but otherwise it seemed fine. I ran out of time to play, though, and to get some urgent work done, went back to 2.4.23-r1, which has been working flawlessly for me; haven't had time since to play some more. YMMV, depending on how well your hardware gets along with it.
