Ok, I have once again installed gentoo, this time with a chance of geting Xfree to work. (:P) But Right now, I am having a problem with yaboot that I have never incountered in my past 3 installs. I finished installing gentoo, and created my /etc/yaboot.conf file (by hand, as usual, yabootconfig dosn't work for some reason with me...). I rebooted, and get as far as a black screen, and the drive spins up, and It hangs....

I'll boot into the live cd in a little bit, and post my /etc/yaboot.conf file, but I'm fairly sure that it is fine. (yes, I did run mkofboot -v.)

suggestions?

I'm a little lost as to what is going on exactly. you reboot and the screen goes blank. what exactly happens on rebooting. after configuring X, why did you reboot? did you set it so that you go into X when you boot? are you not able to boot? do you still get the linux kernel boot msg? are you able to login.

I prolly wont be able to help you. in anycase you can see that whoever is able to help, will need more info then what you gave. tell us EXACTLY what you did(why is even helpful) and what EXACTLY is going on.

I just finished installing gentoo, I am ready to install Xfree if I manage to get yaboot squared away. I rebooted because I was doing what the install instuctions told me to.

Code:
17. Installation complete!

Now, Gentoo Linux is in stalled. the only remaining step is to exit the chrooted shell, safely umount your partitions and reboot the system:

# exit
# cd /
# umount /mnt/gentoo/proc
# umount /mnt/gentoo
# reboot

That is as far as I have goten. When I reboot, the screen flickers from black, to grey, back to black, and then just hangs. I don't get to the yaboot prompt or anything.

My yaboot.conf file...

Code:

boot=/dev/hda10

device=hd:
partition=12

root=/dev/hda12
delay=5
defaultos=macosx
timeout=30
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot

image=/boot/vmlinux
label=Linux
sysmap=/boot/System.map
read-only

macosx=/dev/hda9
enablecdboot
enableofboot

are you sure its a yaboot problem? that sounds like the symtoms of a fried motherboard (common on the iBooks).

It turned out to be an error in yaboot.conf . I finaly goot it working via yabootconfig... It would probably be helpful to the noobs like my self if the instructions said that you had to run

Code:

# ^D
# yabootconfig --chroot /mnt/gentoo

It took me forever to figure that out.

BTW. got gentoo runing with xfree working this time around, and I love it!
