How long does it take for a usable desktop setup to be compiled on a Pismo Powerbook? I'm sure there are others who have installed Gentoo on a Pismo. How long did it take for you to emerge X, KDE, Gimp, etc.?

It looks like it will take me a good 35+ hours to install KDE with all its dependencies. Is that normal?

On my Pismo (400 MHz), it took around two days to get the base system up and running and another two days for X and KDE. Bear in mind, however, that I was using a nice KDE LiveCD and was heavily using my laptop during the day for work, while letting emerge run in the background. At that time I also had some problems compiling gcc and it took another two hours or so until I solved them and I did not always let my Powerbook run gcc the whole night long as it started to get quite hot after 10 hours of 100% CPU load :) Furthermore I used rather agressive CFLAGS, which dramatically increases compilation time (stay with -O2 if you to be done a little quicker).

Taking all these factors into account, I will give you my exact compilation times for the packages you asked for, but as I said these will vary greately depending on the factors mentioned above:

[x11-base/xfree]
5 hours, 13 minutes, 36 seconds
[kde-base/*] (complete kde with all tools, games etc.)
35 hours, 33 minutes, 9 seconds
[media-gfx/gimp]
1 hour, 30 minutes, 32 seconds

Good luck with your Gentoo install and believe me - it is worth the wait :D

I've read in a couple different threads around here that patience is a must when first installing Gentoo. And that once everything is up and running, it will be worth the wait.

Well, they're right. I've finally got a base install of KDE up and running and I can already tell a speed difference between my Gentoo-based system vs. my old Yellow Dog-based system. With Gentoo, windows draw faster, applications seem to launch faster and everything just looks all-around nicer. It really does help to build your system specifically for your hardware.

Right now, I'm just going down the list installing ONLY the things I need or want, which is very nice. Right now, I'm working on Samba, next will be the Gimp.

Kudos to all who make Gentoo such a great product.
