Hi folks,

I thought this shouldn't be a problem, but I'm not able to get XFree running. Im using kernel 2.6.1 (latest ppc-development-sources) and XFree-4.3.0-r2 (I guess it's the latest, too). My machine: G4/400 with ATI Rage.

Even a configuration generated by Xeasyconf lets the server crash with the following message: "FBIOPAN_DISPLAY: Invalid Argument"

I tried to compile DRM support into the kernel and as module, same with the Rage driver and agpgart. Do you have any suggestions? I always get the error mentioned above :-(

Kind regards,
Lars

Hi,

I don't think that this is the problem causing the Xserver to crash. I'm allways getting this error but X is working fine.

Did you take a look at the Xfree log, maybe you'll find some more info there.

Good luck! :D

I am not running this kernel but can you run "FBset -i"
and post the result?
I had a problem with X with the kernel 2.4.24 because
I had compiled the OpenFirmware framebuffer driver in
the kernel and this device would only let me run X in 8bpp.
May be your problem is related?

well it sounds like we might have had two different problems. When I would attempt to start X it would exit to the shell and I would have a radeon module error, AGPGART error and there would be a band on the bottom of the screen about an inch and a half tall. What it turned out to be was that whatever dimensions X was supposed to be past to /dev/fb upon exit were incorrect, so a simple 'fbset -a -move down' fixed this. As for the module probems I have agpgart (and uninorth support) compiled into the kernel and radeon support as a module (I'm also using the 'new' radeon fb driver.).

Lastly none of this explains why I was getting dumped back at the fb whenever I tried to startx. It seems that the command 'startfluxbox' doesn't work with the CVS version I'm using, so by simply switching it in ~/.xinitrc to "fluxbox" fixed this.

I guess this isn't really helpful to you as it's not your problem. :) I do suggest that you go up to 2.6.2_rc1-benh1, as it probably wouldn't hurt.

I ran fbest -i and got the folloong output:
Code:

mode 640 x 480 - 283
#D: 100.000MHz, H:147.059KHz, V:282.805Hz
geometry 640 480 640 480 8
timings 10000 16 16 16 16 8 8
rgba 8/0, 8/0, 8/0, 0/0
endmode

Framebuffer device information:
Name 0FFb ATY, Rage12
Address: 0x96008000
Size: 368640
Type: PACKED PIXELS
VISUAL: PSEUDOCOLOR
XPanStep: 0
YPanStep: 0
YWrapStep: 0
LineLength: 748
Accelerator: No

But i switched back to Kernel 2.4.24 but ran into other problems wit XFree ;-)
