hi,
I noticed some time ago how kernels later than 2.6.0-test9-benh3 hogged up my resources. Well here are the numbers.
I run a banchmark in octave 2.1.50 on a 500MHz ibook2 with three kernels, each time benchmarking octave running as the only process in a VT (no X stqarted) and in an aterm window aside opened mozilla, gaim and top.

the numbers are averaged times to finish the benchmark the code of which i append to the end of this message.
The first number is the timing in a VT and the second with X and stuff running.

2.4.21___________: 29.94, 33.50
2.6.0-test9-benh3: 30.70, 34.78
2.6.1-benh1______: 31.10, 37.01

there is a big gap in performance between the last two tested kernels - what changed since 2.6.0-test9-benh3? Maybe it's some benh patches - i still have to try the vanilla sources.
Top shows a much bigger overhead for every process (like gkrellm - gets 1% of cputime under 2.6.1!)
Also - for example mozilla feels snappier under 2.4 but when it comes to playing movies or doing whatever while doing a big emerge and calculations in the background 2.6 wins hands down - the system responsiveness is amazing.

Code:

  tic;
    a = abs(randn(1500, 1500)/10);
    b = a';
    c= a*b;
    a = reshape(b, 750, 3000);
    b = a';
  timing=toc;

I noticed under 2.4.x how I could run x, fluxbox, aterm, gkrellm2, xmms and xmms-iris (streaming mp3s off the web, which has associated overhead) and using 0-1% CPU power on an 867mhz TiBook. Now it's at least 3% to do the same tasks, usually 5-7% (IIRC).

I attributed it to new radeon drivers in 2.6, but perhaps it runs deeper than that after all.

Thanks for posting.

i compiled the vanilla 2.6.1 sources from kernel.org and while everything seems to be working fine there is none of the above mentioned system overhead. Gkrellm is off the top output, xmms is back to using like 0.3% cputime instead of 3:)
It looks like I'll be sticking to vanilla sources now on my ibook but if there is a problem i'll let you know.
