Okay so i got my gentoo install perfected on this iBook.

The problem is that im only borrowing it from school until tuesday. Typically they re-image the things when they are turned back in, so my perfected install will be lost, and next time i borrow one again i will have to completely redo it all.

Any way anyone can think of to image this entire drive and burn to cds or dvds or even iso images of some sort?

Any help before tuesday the 3rd of feb is greatly appreciated.

dd is generally the way this is done, but I've never done precisely this before. It would help a lot if you had an external HD, or at least a spare partition big enough to hold the dumps of the other partitions; I don't know how dd deals with CDs.

dump is another filesystem archiving tool. It only handles ext2fs (presumably ext3 as well), I believe, but does more of a filesystem thing than simply copying bytes straight from the partition. I haven't emerged it, so I don't have the man page on hand. I suspect that the files produced by dd will be exactly the same size as the each whole partition, regardless of the data in it. dump will be smarter, only copying actual files.

well i can probably obtain an external hard drive that can temporarily store everything that needs to be stored, however will dd copy byte for byte everything ( including free space ) or just anything with data there?

as for dump - then i could just backup the root partition, and then when i get an iBook in my hands again, just fdisk everything as it was previously and do the dump reverse if i understand correctly now right?

That sounds to me like the right approach, but then, I've never done precisely this. Good old tar is also an option, of course. I do know how that works. For that to work, on restore you'd have to fdisk and format before un-tarring. But, gosh, I'd have to think about this a lot, and try it once or twice. How would setting up yaboot be done, for example? Was hoping someone else would chime in.
