I downloaded and burned The 2-CD GRP Gentoo 1.4 PPC G3 Live Cd set.

I put disc 1 in the machine, rebooted and held down C. When the yaboot prompt appeared, I entered "live" and pushed enter. It loaded Elf32, and then a bunch of other white text scrolled down the screen, but then the iBook suddenly shut itself off (the screen went off, and I heard the drives spinning down.) Same thing happened with "live-safe".

I think it has something to do with apmd, but I'm a n00b, so I'm not sure.
I've had this problem with Knoppix-Mib-PPC, as well...

Anyone else's iBook do this? What can I do to make it work?

I searched the forum and the internet for people with the same problem, and came up with a few leads.
However, the general concensus seemed to be that new ISOs should have been uploaded months ago that would correct the issue. I downloaded the ISOs only yesterday, and I still have the problem.

Read the OpenPic thread (the sticky one at the top of this page). Annoyingly, the ISO you d/led is an old one. The new, fixed ones are only available from some obscure linux disc image website.

Thanks.
It would appear that I only have to download and re-burn disc 1, right? because I think 2 isn't even bootable.

Correct. In fact, with broadband, I'd just do a stage 3 install and emerge world and start emerging the essentials: screen, w3m, gltron, fluxbox, aterm etc. :)
