I've read this thread (and that specific post) about how OS X 10.2.8 upgrades open firmware.

I'd like to know whether I could in any way benefit form this update, since I'm on a Gentoo only iBook v2.2 800Mhz and therefore don't have an up-to-date firmware.

Moreover, I was told that booting one of the latest Mac OS X CDs would do the updates without even installing anything. They are not easy to find, though, and I surely ain't buying Panther just to boot it once (bad enough I had to install Jaguar just to get rid of the dong at boot) Is there any other way? For instance, would booting the latest freely available Darwin 7.0 image performe the updates?

Thanks in advance!

You really have nothing to gain by getting the latest firmware. Unless your iBook has firmware related issues, which i doubt.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

How did you get rid of that annoying 'dong' at startup? You mentioned you had to install Jaguar, would it still be possible to disable the sound using Panther?

Ive got the latest 800mhz radeon 9200 iBook here. If that makes any difference...

Yes, I belive so...

Humm... I'd like to get my hands on a Panther CD... maybe then I'd give another try at OS X...

But well, to tell you the truth I can't remember exactly what I did... I thought I had changed some setting, but I've been googling and I can't find anything... So I probably just did what everyone seems to have done: I muted the sound and never returned to OS X (I don't have it installed), so it kept the setting. I belive, however, there must be another way, since from what I know there are 2 diferent volume settings in the PRAM: "startup volume" and "speakers volume".

You can also press mute during boot and that should do it...

I'm really sorry, man... but it's been six months, and I booted Jaguar only once...maybe a Panther CD would revive me... but for 150Eur I better forget it...
