hello all!

basically i'm from the x86 world -- so i have no clue about macs.
i only use linux (except windows xp for bios updates) that's why i don't differ much about processor architecture -> i want a heterogenous u/i.

in my living room at the moment there is an athlon 1000 with nvidia tv-out that i use for divx/dvd on the tv and mainly mp3.
since it's the living room i want to replace the athlon with something much more quite (no noise at all!!) and stylish - that's why i thought about buying an ibook 800 12" (the new one with ati 9200).
i know that tv out isn't working (yet?), but there is mplayer for osx which is basically enough for me -- i don't watch that much video and it should be mainly for mp3s and letting mldonkey run over the night (and that runs in linux).

how is the quality of video out of an ibook?
how is sound quality?

also i want to carry it around because my other computer which is a 15" ibm laptop is a bit too big for having it always with me.
at the moment i use the ibm only in my working room, i don't want to carry it to my living room or somewhere else in my appartment because my g/f mocks up otherwise.

about the ibook:
what i have read (somewhere on the web) is that the cpu power is roughly:
a 800mhz g4 equals to an 800mhz athlon.
if that't true -- that's very disappointing for a new (state of the art) notebook...
you get the power from two years ago for the price of today?!

what i need is opinions or links to (linux)benchmarks (haven't found the right one) or better solutions for my problems...

any ideas? your help is verrrrry welcome.

thanks for your time -----

The TV out quality is average, I think. There are some glitches at black/white transitions. But that depends on the TV, it seems.

The video out is very good. In Linux you can only mirror your screen. For OSX you can find a patch so you can modify your nvram and use higher resolutions than 1024x768 and xinerama mode instead of mirroring (in the german c't magazine was an article about this patch, maybe you can find it online under http://www.heise.de/ct/)
For video out under Linux have a look at my Homepage.
Sound output is very good. Even the little internal speakers. It's only stereo, though.
You want an iBook just for mldonkey and a little Mutlimedia? Is it not a little expensive for just that?

hello!
thanks for info. i even know you page before...
i also want an ibook for getting away the ugly server box in my living room...
the price is average (approx. 1100 euros).
the only thing that that i don't know about is how to rank the processor power. that holds me of buying it.

Why not use an XPC they're small, quiet, and the black ones go really well with a/v equipment?

Alot of them are cooled by heatpipes with a single low-rpm 90-120mm fan, and have video out onboard. If not, you can put a Radeon 9600 non-pre(runs without fan), 9600 Pro Ultimate, or any video card with TV-out for that matter and get a zalman heatpipe. Just some examples. Then move over the drives/processor/memory.

I suggest the 9600s beause they have low power requirements, and don't put out much heat.

This one has svideo out, and SPDIF out
