I'm going to be heading off to college soon, and I'll be retiring my Athlon tbird for a new G5. The question is--which kind of G5 should I get? I heard that an Apple G5 Powerbook is not too far ahead, but a dual processor desktop would def. have some more power behind it. What would any of you recommend, especially keeping the (geeky) college student in mind?

Get a notbook/laptop in any case. You'll like the freedom it offers, and the space it saves.

Yeah, you'll definitely like having a laptop while in college versus a desktop system. While the PowerMac G5s are freaking awesome, I don't think everything in them is supported by Linux yet. I would imagine that a G5 Powerbook would be similar. If you're wanting to install Gentoo on a laptop, then the iBooks are your best bet from what I've read. Get a nice 14" iBook and you won't regret it. I'm running Gentoo on an older Pismo Powerbook and it runs great!
