Hello there.

This question may have been asked millions of times - and if it has can you please point me to where it is asked (I wasn't sure what to search for).

Say you had a athlon xp 1700 (1.4Ghz) 512mb sd RAM and geforce 3 video card.

Now say you had the exact same system but it is a G4 PPC (same drive, video card for mac, ram, etc).

If they are both running Gentoo Linux, how fast would the PPC need to be in order to outperform the athlon xp?

Sorry, but what frequency does the G4 has got? A 1ghz G4 is very different than a 500mhz G4...

That's what I'm asking :)

What frequency of G4 would compare to the althlon of equal hardware?

Would a G4 600Mhz be equivalent to a athlon xp 1.4ghz (with same hardware and gentoo linux)?

Or what?

Thank you

i reallydont know but my xp1800 did compile alot faster than my g4 867.
but the the g4 uses sdram and the xp ddr memory. the g4 does realy shines with operations that uses altivec i remeber that my g4 500 was almost as fast as my xp1800 with dnetc but then agian only multimedia and some scientific apps use the altivec

Thanks for the start.

Actually my xp1700 still uses PC133 RAM so the RAM would be the same between the G4 and athlon...

Basically - If I where to buy a 1Ghz G4 and a logic board and get a equiv video card - If I where to get all of the above and replace my current pc mobo and athlon with it - would I see a drastic improvement?

Keeping in mind the RAM, hard drive, etc would all be the same.

Just curious...

I've heard the speed of a G4 is about 1.5 the speed of a P4...

So a 600mhz g4 would be a 900Mhz P4... anyone know if this is true or not?

I don't think you'll get much improvement (if any) by replacing a 1.4Ghz Athlon with a 1Ghz G4. It'll depend very much on what you're doing with it. Also, I think what makes the largest difference in a Linux desktop computer when the processor is faster then say 800-900Mhz, is how well the motherboard is designed, what harddisk controllers it uses, and how fast the front side bus is (and the amount of cache on the processor)...

If you're thinking about using a G4 processor for a homebuilt Linux-only machine, your only real good reasons for doing so, would, as I see it, be power consumption, and/or the fact that it might run cooler, so you could spare some noise.

Just my opinion.
