I recently tried fluxbox and KDE after having used xfce4 for a while(and Gnome before that), and noticed that fonts in xchat2/firebird were much smaller.

After searching the forums(finding nothing) I tried checking /usr/bin/startxfce4 for something that could help. Nothing there, but I found the solution in /etc/xfce4/xinitrc:

Code:
xrdb -nocpp -merge - << EOF
Xft.dpi: 96
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.hintstyle: hintmedium
EOF

For Fluxbox, you need to put this in ~/.fluxbox/startup, before the "exec /usr/bin/fluxbox" line.

I don't think KDE has a similar file where you can put this into, so you have to put this at the top of either /etc/X11/Sessions/kde-<version>(if you use a login manager) or /usr/kde/<version>/startkde.

Putting the lines

Xft.dpi: 96
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.hintstyle: hintmedium

in ~/.Xdefaults will do the same thing AFAIK
