I did it and it seems to work well... apart from a few strange messages that went away when recompiling with the new compiler...

Have fun*

I've been using it since it was pushed into portage and haven't had any issues that seemed compiler-related (there are builds that fail, but they fail on all GCC versions). I also bumped up glibc to match. I've built kernels etc. without any problems.

I'm running GCC 3.3.2-r2 and have had no problems at all, does anyone know when this is likely to make it to ~ppc ?

Yes, I'm curious about this too!

Running gcc 3.3.2-r5 now. No problems so far...

Why not ~ppc? Would be interesting to hear why!

(it's even "ppc64" now!!)

I thought there were binary incompatibilities between GCC 3.x and 3.y, but obviously I was wrong! Can't wait to try GCC 3.3 under linux. Benefits are compiling speed and optimization for the G4, no?

No, that was just between =< 3.1 and => 3.2, but that's not supposed to happen ever again.

And you're probably thinking of Apple's GCC 3.3, which is a quite different beast.

Meaning their changes haven't been committed/submitted to the main GCC branch?

Well, this is from the 3.4 releasenotes:
Substantial improvements in compile time have been made, particularly for non-optimizing compilations.

And the 3.3 releasenotes doesn't say anything about compile speed.
