I am looking into a dual 2.0 G5 and I am wondering what the status is with 2.6, Gentoo and the G5 hardware. Does the sound, networking, fans, Firewire, USB etc. work fine?

From looking at the kernel changelogs, I can say the following:

Sound = NO!
Networking = YES
Fans = YES!
FireWire = YES
USB = YES
Accellerated Framebuffer = YES
Accellerated X = Not sure.
Accellerated 3D = No.

But maybe someone with a G5 could add something, and we'd get a whole G5 compability list?

From what I have heard the fans work 100% in that they are on 100% of the time at 100% speed. So it's a bit noisy but you probably have no risk of hardware damage from heat.

That was the very first builds that would run on the G5 at all. And that was a long time ago.
Ben Herrenschmidt has implemented complete thermal mangagement for the G5 systems now. He's employed by yellowdoglinux to do things like that.. (I think?)

And it looks like he only has sound left:

Well that proves me wrong, and is pretty cool on top of that. heh. I guess I just need to find someone to led me a G5 so I can test things out and have a reason to know more about them..
