Hurry up ...........
qemu now support vesa on emulation

"Hi,

Bochs VESA VBE support is now commited in QEMU. I was able to use a Knoppix CD in 1024x768x16 without problems. All the screen depths (4, 8, 5, 16, 24 and 32) should work.

Some work is still needed to make it work in qemu-fast.

Fabrice.

Interesting.....

Can I use bochs instead of vmware to run windows xp? Or windows 98? I've tried bochs one time before but it's difficult (was pre-2) and I doesn't run well then.

Greetings PieterB

Yes, it is true, bochs is too slow... my processor (G4 1ghz) in bochs is a pentium 75mhz..

Please let me know how fast qemu is compared to bochs. I have used VMWare and Bochs on my Powerbook G4 867 Mhz with entirely too sluggish results. Gentoo was unusable because it took forever to emerge things (even on gentoo-ppc, I need to use distcc to get things places). Under Bochs, my 867Mhz CPU became a dragging 32 Mhz. VMWare said that my CPU was emulated as a PII but actually was a i586 generic (found this when CFLAGS weren't working as they should have - then a kernel compile).

What's the verdict?

"QEMU is about 65 times faster than Bochs." At least for x86 emulated on x86, and knowing that Bochs uses software MMU, and qemu does not.

My experience (runing stuff like gzip ou bzip2) shows that RedHat 9 i386 binaries run between 10 and 15 times slower than gentoo nativelly compiled and optimized binaries (I'm talking about qemu-i386 user emulation)

That makes a pretty usable (but slow) gflashplayer, for instance..

Don't think you can get mmx and sse working.. just stick with i386 binaries..

Hello,

I am pretty interested in running some windows programs (e.g. 3.1) on my mac under gentoo...
Did you succeed in getting some of these working ? (Examples ?)

Another point: how do you install Win 3.1 on top of qemu ? (I am a newbie in using emulators).

Regards,

Xavier
