There is an ibm utility to create the necessary hibernation file on fat32 partitions.

If you do not have a fat32 partiton, create one using your program of choice (fdisk, parted, qparted). Always back up your data before messing with the partition table! Type ID should be b (Win95 FAT32). Make it large enough to hold the hibernation file, max swap + system memory.

The ibm utility creates a boot disk. I had no luck getting it to extract with wine, so I extracted to a floppy on a windows machine and burnt a bootable cd from that. Perhaps freedos would work.

Once in dos, execute phdisk.exe, specify create hibernation file (create hibernation partition is not yet supported) and set the size.
