Hi all,

I have finished installing most of the software for my Gentoo box (version 1.2, on an OldWorld, Beige G3 desktop) and have found that I can't get the sound to go. To be more specific, programs such as xmms complain that /dev/dsp doesn't exist (and indeed it doesn't). This seems odd to me, and I don't know how to fix the problem. When compiling the kernel I added sound card support, and powermac DMA sound support, and I followed all of the instructions in the install guide. What have I missed, and what should I do to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Paul Cochrane

you might also try to turn on the OSS option (altho you don't need any specific models). This helps some machines pick it up properly

I tried this, but no luck. Btw, esd is installed but doesn't start. This I expect to be due to /dev/dsp not existing, since if I start esd manually it complains that /dev/dsp isn't there. One other thing to note is that cdplay goes, but doesn't produce any sound, I don't know if that's any help at diagnosing the problem. Thanks heaps for your help though :-)

On my Oldworld 7600 modules were not enough, I had to add both DMA and OSS sound support to the kernel. I also have persistant OSS buffers.

In the latest kernel (2.4.24-benh0), I did not need to build OSS.

DMASOUND_PMAC has its own DMASOUND_CORE
and will also autoload SOUNDCORE when MODPROBEd

So I wonder if ALSA (with no driver) would build? with OSS compat
(ALSA-OSS), but would that provide anytyhing usefull? (midi emu, etc)
