I have a powerbook pismo with Gentoo installed.
Since this little box is rather slow at compiling Im
considering using distcc to get help from my dual g5 with Mac OS X.

To make this work do I have to build a gcc cross compiler in
mac os x that can link and make gentoo ppc binaries?

Does anyone know how to setup and compile such a gcc cross compiler?

I almost forgot, no I **wont** install linux on my g5 box!

Building that specific cross-compiler is done the same way as any other cross-compiler.. it just might work.

I've tried twice, though unsuccessfully, to build a i686-pc-cygwin to powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu toolchain. You'll just have to try it out.

First of all build binutils for a powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu target on your G5, then build GLIBC and linux-headers nativelly (on your Pismo). This are the easy steps.. Then you'll have to try building a cross gcc for a powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu target on your G5..

Read this (and other cross-compilation threads or sites for more):
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=66930

You'll find the process is always similar.. the thing is that it sometimes works (for specific combinations of host/build/target, and specific versions of binutils/glibc/gcc), and others it just doesn't..

The only advices I can give you are, trying to build glibc nativelly and using the same sources (with all the patches) that you use at your Pismo (with "ebuild xpto.ebuild unpack")

By the way, has anybody done this for a cygwin host, powerpc target? Or at least a x86 livecd host? My P4 at home would be great for compiling XFree and stuff..

KruzeS: Where did your cygwin cross-compiler process fail?

I would just like to reiterate KruzeS point about patches here, for anyone who is going to try building a cross-compiler. You will be tearing your hair out if you don't apply the patches for gcc and binutils.
