I just got a new iBook G4 12inch two weeks ago, and started install
gentoo.

But I'm still stuck on that

I installed gentoo using 1.4 Live CD, the problem is I cannot boot up
my iBook with my compiled kernel.
I just copied the vmlinux image from CD and using it.

I want to compile the kernel, and install gnome. I read the instructions
carefully and followed step by step, (including "make menuconfig")
I included everything the guide book says to include, and excluded to be said...

When I try to boot with my own kernel(2.4.2), it just goes down.
I don't know it's openpic error or not, cuz messages just vanished at the boot time. But it seems to be an openpic bug...
With the copied kernel, it works well, but to use the gnome, I think I should compile the kernel.

If my .config or make.conf files are needed, just let me know.
I've gotto run to my school now.

Thanx

Okay... first, there's no need to compile a kernel to run gnome as such. Assuming the gentoo kernel has support for your video card, which it does, there is no advantage to compiling your own kernel (unless you want a newer eg: 2.6.x kernel) besides the educational value.

That said, the problem lies in your kernel config. May I suggest you cd /usr/src/linux and make menuconfig. Check zojas' site for iBook kernel info: http://www.desertsol.com/~kevin/ppc/#kernelconfig as he offers a .config to download which works for him.

EDIT: I am almost certain you have not compiled in support for 'Early Text Boot Console' which is available (IIRC) under Character Devices (anyone care to correct? I don't have gentoo installed ATM). What this means is you computer is booting fine, you just don't have a viewable console. Logging in, executing commands, etc, should all 'work' except that you would be doing so 'blind'.

Hope this helps.

:D

Thanks a lot stimuli.

I just wanted to use radeon 9200 as a module.
I compiled the 2.6.2 kernel last night(before reading your post).
And it looks working fine.

But I'll check with the 2.4.x kernel as what you said.
