With the whole license debate going on these days with XFree, I was wondering if it would be possible to compile the ati driver found in 4.4 (the one used for my iBook G4) and run it with 4.3.

I currently have 4.3 installed on my iBook and would need to recompile 4.4rc2/3 for it to work and that's something i'd rather not do if at all possible.

I know Xfree has binary drivers for x86 available, so I'm guessing it can be done. Anyone has a binary for ppc available ?

Thanks

Ok, I was able to make it work. I don't know if anyone has made binary available on the net, but googling was too much work so decided to do a custom compile of XFree 4.4rc3 myself :D

Once done, I copied 3 files for my ati card (iBook G4 14") and it works! This means I can use Xfree 4.3 with the new drivers. No need to use unstable package (although I guess the drivers are) and no license bullshit since AFAIK, the drivers are not affected by the new license. I might be wrong though.

Since it does work but is a little long, I've packaged the drivers into two tarballs ready for download. The first one is for the ibookG4 users and contains only the 3 files I used. The other one is 1.8MB and contains every drivers.

I simply copied the files into : /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers

iBookG4 ati drivers (16KB)

All PPC drivers (1.8MB--please be gentle!)

(Compiled using gcc-3.2.3-r4)

Cool, thanks! I'll have to give it a try.

Gentoo won't add any xfree ebuild with the new license so you're really safe with the 4.3.99.902 ebuild from gentoo (RC - 2).
That's release candidate 2,
and the new license applies to RC - 3.
So just go ahead and install whatever you find in portage, they all have nice licenses.

Running said ebuild.
