I would like to setup xfree/kde from a binary so i dont have to wait a few days for my machine to compile. I have copied the packages from CD2 but am not sure how up-to-date the packages are and dont want to use them. I have done some reading and seems like using emerge --getbinpkg would be the best way to go to get the latest package. Am i right? Also, if i use emerge --getbinpkg, will it download the binaries related to my system (PPC) or will it be a very general binary?

At the moment, there are no mirrors for binaries for any platform.. --getbinpkg is all but useless at the moment.. :(

Nope - you have to copy the tarballs to /usr/portage/packages/All, and then use --usepkg to install them. The problem with this is if you don't still have the special GRP portage snapshot from your livecd, these won't apply.

Either way, instructions on using GRP can be found on this page in the Gentoo Handbook, near the bottom.

Having said that, the best tactic is to, for example, emerge kde overnight. This way, xfree will be merged as a dependency, and depending on your Mac, it should all be ready for you in the morning!

Good luck!
