Hi,

the recent benh kernels don't boot on my PB 12". Boot process just halts after mounting the proc filesystem.

I'm using the same config (make oldconfig) as with other 2.6.x kernels and they run fine (currently running 2.6.2-r1).

Help!

Try backing out most of the kernel extras like drivers, etc. Then re-build a basic kernel. Once that boots then start adding the extras back in. It's a trial and error process but eventually you can find out which drivers, etc are causing the hang.

I have an G3 iBook 12', 800MHz, and ppc-development-sources-2.6.3-r2 are
running fine.
I did not try an earlier version of 2.6.3.
Maybe an update to r2 works for you.

I talked with Ben about this issue via the debian powerpc mailing list. It seems he is working on it.

However, I will try -r2 and maybe its already fixed (but I doubt it).

Ben says it's something in userland. That would make it gentoo related, right?

I can't emerge 2.6.3-r2 because md5 sums are not correct:

!!! File is corrupt or incomplete. (Digests do not match)
>>> our recorded digest: 9bc8be56c37fff17d926200f2bb8e0e9
>>> your file's digest: e706fb883f655bf5a724575b69dcc8d7
!!! File does not exist: /usr/portage/distfiles//patches-2.6.3-benh2.bz2

Did you not encouter that problem?

I did not have this problem. Probably something went wrong with the download. Maybe try emerging it again.

No,

emerge sync && emerge /usr/portage/sys-kernels/ppc-development-sources/ppc-development-sources-2.6.3-r2.ebuild

did not help.

To solve the MD5 error, try this:
Code:
ebuild /usr/portage/sys-kernel/ppc-development-sources/ppc-development-sources-2.6.3-r2.ebuild digest

The patch seems to be corrupt:

[skip]
patching file drivers/video/console/fbcon.c
patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line
patch: **** unexpected end of file in patch

!!! ERROR: sys-kernel/ppc-development-sources-2.6.3-r2 failed.
!!! Function src_unpack, Line 45, Exitcode 2
!!! patch failed

Ok, then first try deleting the file /usr/portage/distfiles/patches-2.6.3-benh2.bz2
Then do again 'emerge sync' to get rid of the bad digest you have now and then again try to emerge the kernel. It will then download the hopefully correct version of the file.

Thanks, that fixed my problem. Weird though ...

Anyway, 2.6.3-r2 hangs at boot exactly as other 2.6.3-r* kernels for me.

Please, Gentoo Developers, fix it! As I said above, Benjamin Herrenschmitt told me it's a userland problem. Maybe something with the init scripts?

If you're building the kernel with the gcc-3.3.3-pre20040215 compiler, you may want to check out this thread.

8O 8 posts to tell me this? 8O

It does not seem related to my problem. Maybe I should open a new post in P&P?

Is no developer around who could fix this issue?

Well, as I said before. 2.6.3-benh2 works fine for me. However, I am still using gcc 2.95.3 (basicly too lazy to do all that complicated update stuff :) ) Maybe that could be a reason ??

I'm using gcc 3.2.3-r4. Heck, only sparc has a less up-to-date gcc version :evil: But still I can't see this is related to a boot hang :?

HELP :cry:

My personal experiences with that compiler is that it has some I/O issues. It does however fix some altivec issues.

Could you test the new 2004.0 release? The 2004.0 livecds has a 2.6.3-r2 kernel. Could you let me know if you're able to boot with 'debug' as kernel option? If you get a busybox shell, then I have an idea what may be causing this problem.

My guess is that it's a core package related bug (compiler, linker...). We are looking into this.

Hi

I was the one who filled the bug report after my last post here. Let me know when the images are ready and where to get them and I will try it again.

BTW, just updated to gcc/glibc 2.3.3_pre20040207 (from stable 2.3.2-r9) and still the same problem.
