I suspect that your keyboard is the same we have in France. Here is how I had correct mapping on my powerbook g4 :

1) firts dl kbd-mac.tar.gz from ftp.linux-france.org/pub/macintosh

2) extract it

for console :

Code:
cp mac-fr-ext_new.kmap.gz /usr/share/keymaps/mac/mac-fr-ext_new.map.gz
edit /etc/rc.conf and change KEYMAP="us" to KEYMAP="mac-fr-ext_new
"

for x11 :
Code:
cp fr_new /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/macintosh/

edit InputDevice section that correspond to keyboard in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

and change it to :

Code:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier  "Keyboard0"
Driver      "keyboard"
Option  "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option  "XkbModel" "macintosh"
Option  "XkbLayout" "fr_new"
EndSection

hi,

I have an ibookG4 1GHz, and some problems with the keyboard too. I did exactly what you adviced. But the ctrl/alt/apple keys seems to not work with xorg (6.7)

When using the startx command, i have the following error :
Code:
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Error:            Alt_R added to symbol map for multiple modifiers
>                   Using Mod2, ignoring Mod1.
> Error:            Alt_L added to symbol map for multiple modifiers
>                   Using Mod2, ignoring Mod1.
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

I had the same with my debian/sarge but it worked perfectly.

My xorg.conf keyboard section :
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier   "Generic Keyboard"
   Driver      "keyboard"
   Option      "CoreKeyboard
   Option      "XkbRules"   "xorg"
   Option      "XkbModel"   "macintosh"
   Option      "XkbLayout"   "fr_new"
EndSection

I have also tried with
Code:
Option      "XkbLayout"   "fr_new(extended)"
(from https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=121391) and several other solutions from www.linux-on-laptops.com. None works
I have tried with pbbuttonsd disable too.
I can't understand and it really hurts me.
Maybe i've missed something ?

Any ideas would be really appreciated

I have met quite the same problem, and tried the same solution, that is download the mappings from linux-france, installing them and modifying the config files accordingly. There does not seem to be any major problem (although I also receive the errors from xkbcomp), but the alt key does not work any more, (alt-Fn inactive in console mode, special characters such as "{}\|" unavailable). And since the last lines of fr_new are NOT commented, I cannot comment them out and solve the problem as easily as chcl3 did. Is I suppose the problem relates to the xkbcomp error:
Code:
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Error:            Alt_R added to symbol map for multiple modifiers
>                   Using Mod2, ignoring Mod1.
> Error:            Alt_L added to symbol map for multiple modifiers
>                   Using Mod2, ignoring Mod1.
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

but I am quite a newbie in the matter of keys mapping, so if anyone could give me some advice, or even better if anyone knows how to solve the problem, I would greatly appreciate (coding in C without "{" can be quite disturbing ;) ). If you need some additional information (log files...) please say so.

Thanks in advance

I have the same error on an Apple iBook G4 12".

And I don't understand what I must do. I've tried fr_new, fr_new(extended) but it doesn't work correctly !
Nobody have solved this trouble? I don't want to emulate an alt-gr touch with my Apple touch, I just want to be able to switch tty with pressing ctrl+alt and switching app's with alt+tab.

Thanks a lot !
