I'm about to order powermac G5 (1.6) and put Gentoo on it with a 2.6 kernal. I was wondering if I should go for a stock nvidia
fx 5200 ultra or ati radeon 9600 pro?

Am I correct in saying that neither is supported as "yet" on the power pc platform with regards to 3D (i.e only 2D) ?

I'm interested if anybody has manged to get a
powermac g5 and the ati readeon 9600 pro in 2D to work?
I believe Xfree 4.3 "nv" driver works for the nvidia fx 5200 ultra but I could be wrong.

(Ok, all of this is just from reading, haven't tried it myself)

You should get a Radeon because:
* It's faster. http://www.insidemacgames.com/features/view.php?ID=280
* It has better 2D accelleration in linux than the NV chip. I'm not sure you'll get 2D at all with the NV chip... http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.99.903/radeon.4.html
* You might get 3D accelleration some day, not too far away. "3D using open sourced DRI drivers is only supported on radeon cards up to the 9200. 3D support using open sourced DRI for r300 based cards (9500 and above) is only available from ati's binary driver (for 3d on r300 based cards you need to use theproprietary drivers). " http://dri.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/ATIRadeon

Both companies support x86 with binary drivers, but ATI are the only ones supporting PPC and releasing specs for opensource drivers.

That's really the issue for me - if ATI will indeed release the specs for the radeon 9600 pro in the future to enable 3D.

The latest Xfree 4.4 release candidates say that the "nv" driver has now much better 2D support. So maybe it won't matter longer if you get a Nvidia or an ATI Radeon in your powermac g5 since both will only be able to run quite well in 2D mode. Yes of course one can dual boot into OS X and play 3D games but I'm not into games really.

My post was partly to get an indication which card is easier to setup with Gentoo and of course for some opinions.
