I've had a few problems getting GRUB to boot Windows and with Linux finding the root partition.

If you use ReiserFS for the root, remember to compile the support for it into the kernel, and not as a module - I've just done this and have spent the last day trying to figure out why my kernel wouldn't boot!

As for dual-booting, don't forget to use rootnoverify(hdX,Y) instead of root(hdX,Y) - I didn't realise that you had to use one or the other, and had stuck both in the same file!

Hope this helps someone, even if it has been posted before.

Actually, they are both unnecessary for booting Windows.

Here is the grub.conf I use on my laptop.
Code:
default 0
timeout 15
root (hd0,1)
splashimage /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title Gentoo
kernel /boot/vmlinuz

title Gentoo - old kernel
kernel /boot/vmlinuz.old

title Windows
chainloader (hd0,0)+1

this only works if you have windows and linux on the same hardrive, just different partitions..... Installing on 2 different hardrives on the same machine needs a bit much more effort....
