If I wanted to switch my YDL system to gentoo without mucking with the kernel / booting stuff, is it in theory possible to just rm everything but /boot and overwrite the filesystem with a gentoo stage3 and continue the install from there?

I guess you could, but is it really worth it? Although I'm no Yellow Dog nor Gentoo expert, I would _guess_ there's enough discrepancies between the two that the time you save in cleverness is more than lost in hazzle.

When I've changed OS's in the past I've just backed up my docs, and configs and blown all the rest away, just to be sure some old crooked little file will come back and get me further down the road.

That being said, you mac folks tend to be a nifty lot, so why not give it a try. Good luck.
