I've followed the install instructions, but cannot get my Apple 1999 Lombard Power Book G3 laptop to install the stage 3 and portage snapshot files from my Gentoo 1.4 live cd. I have a simple partition scheme on my 6GB hard drive: a bootstrap, swap and root partition. I apply a ext3 filesystem to my root partition without a problem. I activate the swap partition with no problem. I create the /mnt/gentoo directory using mkdir and mount my root partition using "mount /dev/hda9 /mnt/gentoo" with no problem. I also create and mount "mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc" with no problem. But when I try to extract the stage tarball I can't get beyond the listing of the stages on the live cd. I also cannot get the system to list the available portage snapshots from the live cd. From the root prompt I enter ls /mnt/cdrom/stages just like the Gentoo intallation notes require. I get an error message that says the directory or file does not exist. The install notes recognize the possibility of that error message and instruct one to mount the cdrom by entering at the root prompt: "mount /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom". I do that and get a message that the cdrom is already mounted and read only. I try the ls /mnt/cdrom/stages command again and get the same error message that the file or directory does not exist. What am I doing wrong?

I ran into a similar problem installing from the PPC 1.4 LiveCD. This is what I guessed.

The stages are actually located at /mnt/cdrom/g3-stages (the install guide is a little general)

the distfiles are in /mnt/cdrom/distfiles

the portage snapshot is in /mnt/cdrom/portage.tbz2 (you should untar it in /usr since it contains paths starting with /portage)

and the GRP packages are on the 2nd CD under .../packages.

Hope this helps.
