Greetings,

I love Gentoo on my x86, so I decided to give my old Bondi iMac a new life and put 2004.0/PPC on it.

I have tried booting with both the Minimal and Universal install ISO's. They both boot successfully when I press Enter at the boot prompt. When I am at the boot prompt and press TAB as instructed to be able to choose a different kernel, I notice that the G4 kernel has an * beside it making it the default kernel. My iMac is a G3, so I would like to boot using the G3 kernel. The instructions say, to boot using any of the other kernels, just type its label then press enter. When I type G3 then press enter I get the following error:

cd:-1,/boot/G3: Unknown or corrupt filesystem

But if I press enter by itself, it seems to boot fine, apparently using the G4 kernel. How do I get the Live-CD to boot using the G3 kernel?

Second issue, no matter if I boot using the Minimal or Universal CD, the /mnt/gentoo mount point does not show up automatically? Any ideas as to why this is happening?

By the way don't get me started on the issues with the handbook on installing on a Mac. For as far as I have gotten I have already found a few problems that could be very confusing for a complete noob. I have installed Gentoo on my x86 several times now (1.4 and 2004.0) so luckily I can take my knowledge from that and be able to work around issues in the handbook!

I think the handbook authors should go through a PPC installation using thier handbook, word for word, so they can see exactly what I am talking about.

Other than those few issues, I am looking forward to getting Gentoo 2004.0 installed on my little old iMac so it can shine on with my x86 PC's and start talking the same OS, so to speak.

Gord

I think that G3=G4 on the 2k4 CDs so you should be good there, its the same kernel. Do things work Ok with the G4 kernel ?

Yeah the mac specific instructions are lacking.. did you check out the mac FAQ?

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml

mac-fdisk was what got me, if not for the forums I would have been lost.

I'd be more than happy to. Please send me some PPC hardware :)

The instructions in the handbook are based on the information we receive from the PPC developers and users. This is afaik the best we can do without having access ourselves to a (or several) PPC boxes.

I've got a couple OLD world pre-g3 ppcs that you can have :) pick-up only :)
In all reality the documentation is good, hell what other distro supports ppc to even that extent ? Its just no the step by step quide that some of us have come to expect, but that may be better as sometimes mistakes are a great way to learn.

Also where can I report positive experiences with ppc related software ? Like the development sources for example, they've been working quite nicely on my PB.

thanks

I've asked pylon to review the handbook for ppc. Sven, can you follow up with pylon and make sure progress is made?

Ok, did a review myself and posted comments to Sven. Let us know what is still unclear. 2004.1 is comming up and the handbook should be perfect.

Hey guys thanx for all the responses. Please don't get me wrong, I am not trying to flame any of the developers or the authors of the Handbook. One of the reasons I chose Gentoo on my x86 boxes was due to the quality of the distro and documentation. I guess my comments should be taken as "constructive critisims".

I am working my way through the 2004.0 install on my Bondi iMac as I write this and am compiling the steps I needed to go through. When I have completed the install I can post my installation steps along with the issues that I found in the handbook. I will also try to come up with possible revisions/solutions to the issues. If anyone is interested in seeing this information please let me know and I will gladly post it, once my installation is completely finished (could take a while though on this 233Mhz G3).

I've just finished installing the base system on my green imac (233 G3) which took a few tries before I got it working. If you're stuck at some point I'm be happy to help you out , send me a PM or something.

btw: without checking the forums  , could anyone tell me how I would be able to edit the handbook entries for ppc ?
This is by far the most fun I've had with installing any distribution and would like to give a hand in making the whole install process easier for other first time ppc installers.
