I've been given the task of installing linux on a G5. I'm not typically a gentoo user, so my knowledge is somewhat sparse. The problem I'm having is the kernel does not seem to support the onboard ethernet using the livecd 2004.0. This proves to be a problem given gentoo's network based install methods. I was able to boot and create a stage2 (3?) working environment, but due to the lack of network support I am unable to use emerge. I've searched extensively and no one seems to be having this problem. I've discovered the distfiles directory on the cdrom and am hoping I can compile a kernel from the sources in there. Is this what I need to do, or have I overlooked something? Thanks for any insight.

This is just a wild guess, but based on the other things I have seen about needing to load a module to get the fan support on the G5 could there be an issue like that? Does the ethernet need a module loaded to support it?

#modprobe sungem

got the ethernet working on my PB.
check /lib/modules/'uname -r'/kernel/drivers/net on the live CD. The module for the ethernet should be in there. Just modprobe them and check dmesg for the one that fires up eth0.

good luck.

I got to see the machine in question, and this is exactly what was needed to get it going. Thanks for the suggestion.
