Hi,

I own a 1Ghz 12'' Powerbook and i'm in the process of configuring gentoo. Now it's xfree turn.

I have searched all these forums to see if somebody has solved it, but I get lost somewhere in the explanations.

The only way startx works is by using the "nv" driver in an 8-bit awful mode (blue and black, completely disgusting).

Here I read something about compiling the kernel with nvidia experimental compatibility. Where is it? I have also added the line "riva1024x768-16" to the yaboot.conf file but nothing positive happens.

edit: working with a 2.4.24r2 kernel

Any ideas? Can anybody who succeeded in installing it help me?

Thank you in advance.

Hi!
I own a 1Ghz 12'' Powerbook and i'm in the process of configuring gentoo. Now it's xfree turn.

Me too. First I tried out YellowDog 3.0. X worked on my iBook. Then I sold it and bought a 12" PB. I had the same ugly effects which you are describing. Thus I installed YellowDog 3.01 which has a newer X-server. It worked without problems. But soon I got pissed off with rpm and the whole distribution with too much things I do not need.
However, I just started with gentoo and at the moment the compiling-marathon is still in progress...
Before I started I made a copy of XFree86.config. I hope that I can install the right X-server and copy the config file back. So it must be a driver problem.
Maybe you can help me later on a bit with some snares?

cu,
h.

Can you e-mail me this XFree86.config with the version of the xfree you used to me?

Since I'm not a native English-speaker I don't know what you mean by "snares", but if I can help you, count on me!

Hi!

Can you e-mail me this XFree86.config with the version of the xfree you used to me?

Sure, it´s´on the way.

Since I'm not a native English-speaker I don't know what you mean by "snares", but if I can help you, count on me!

Me too ;) I found that word in a dictionary. It means something like anoying problems you never thought of before.
Thanx for your help (in advance)!

I have a pretty functional system now (still without X, since it is not important for the moment). The next snare I have is the modem. Somebody here told me nothing promising. Does your modem work?

Back to X. I copied my XFree86.config and started X with startx. Nothing happend. Just a black screen. I even couldn´t kill the X-server.
I don´t know which version I installed (with emerge) but probably it is not the right one. With Yellowdog I used something newer than 4.3.0 (the newest is 4.4.0). Maybe it was a special YD-version. I can´t find it anymore.

h.

hypocrite, I love you!!!

I gave your archive a try but the screen went black. I then compared my 8-bit configuration file with your one, and realised some things were missing.

After that, only just to see wat happened, I concatenated one after another and executed startx.

Surprise.

It works!! now I have an xfree running on 1024x768@24bits!!!!

Thank you!!! really, you have saved my life!!!

-----------

referring to the modem thing: I am sorry but I don't know how to make it work. In fact I never expected it to work (I don't use dialup connections). But I will ask some friends who have g3/g4 ibooks (maybe they know). I'll tell you asap.

Cheers[/b]

Nice to hear that. My little plan worked! First install YD to see what works, than copy /etc, put gentoo on the PB and adapt all with the help of these config-files.
Could you simply explain what was missing? Or better post your XFree86.config (the important parts of it). Thus all PB12" users here could have X running.

referring to the modem thing:
Don´t get busy. I even didn´t started to compile the driver. I think this is a problem which won´t be easy to get rid of. But it always helps (often only to see that you are not alone) to ask people about their experiences.

Hi!

I found another way to get X starting:
I copied this configuration (http://www.desertsol.com/~kevin/ppc/XF86Config-4.3.0-r2) to /etc/X11/XFree86.config and changed "Radeon" in the device section with "nv". Furthermore I commented out the option "UseFBDev". That´s it :D

I emerged the hcfusbmodem package. I had to learn first how to handle masked packages. After commenting out ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc" in /etc/make.conf and the entry for hcfusbmodem in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask, I was able to emerge it.
Next I have to see whether it really works.

Bye,
h.
